Local government communication courses

Communication skills training for local government and councils

From local government teams to council leaders, clear communication builds trust and delivers faster, better outcomes for residents. Our communication courses give your people the skills to write for action, present with confidence and resolve complex issues with ease. Since 2008, we’ve been trusted by local governments across Australia to deliver results and forge stronger community connections.

Why invest in communication skills training for your council?

In a world racing ahead with AI, it’s still your people – and how they communicate – who shape productivity and community confidence.

We run focused workshops that give your team tools they can put to work by the time they get back to their desks. Every session is led by an experienced facilitator and tailored to the documents, decisions and community your council deals with every day.

The result is a noticeable lift in clarity and confidence that staff will see and residents will benefit from. Your team will learn to:

  • Write reports that drive faster executive decisions
  • Turn policy into plain English your community understands
  • Keep emails and briefing notes concise and action-focused
  • Present service and project updates with confidence
  • Handle sensitive messaging calmly and constructively
  • Maintain a consistent tone and standard across departments

Overcoming real workplace challenges

We help your team harness proven strategies they can rely on when the stakes are high and the pressure’s on. They’ll learn to:

  • Create clearer resident-facing content: Help teams write web pages, letters and email updates that reduce confusion and avoid needless back-and-forth with residents.
  • Write reports that drive decisions: Give governance and project teams the skills to lead with recommendations, order sections for flow and spotlight clear actions.
  • Build leadership presence: Help your senior managers and executives build buy-in and bring stakeholders on the journey. Become a team of confident, persuasive leaders who influence with impact.
  • Improve cross-department communication: Give teams shared tools for clearer updates and project communication – so information moves faster between governance, planning, customer service and leadership teams.

FAQs for local government communication training

Do you deliver training at our council?

Yes, we travel to your council offices – metro or regional. We’ve trained dozens of inner-city and remote councils across Australia. Need a venue? We can arrange one.

Who runs the training sessions?

We’re an experienced team of professional writers, consultants, storytellers and business leaders. We use the tools and tactics we teach every day. That’s how we know they work – because we rely on them ourselves.

What's the maximum number of participants per workshop?

We cap workshops at 20 people for face-to-face workshops and 10 people for online sessions. Got more people to train? Ask about our long-term programs, including Graduate Communication Essentials and Leadership Communication Accelerator.

Can smaller or larger teams book?

Yes, smaller and larger teams are welcome to book. We run masterclasses for smaller teams and multi-day programs for larger organisations.

Is the online writing training live or self-paced?

We offer both.

Our online live team writing training is facilitated in real time. Our goal is to match the interactive face-to-face experience as closely as possible. Your people can ask questions and share their thoughts.

We also offer Business Writing Essentials as a self-paced online course. That way, your team members can learn on their own schedule with 12 months of access. They’ll enjoy interactive activities, practical downloads, instant answers and expert writing wisdom, all at your fingertips.

What technology does my team need for online delivery?

For online delivery, your team only needs a computer or laptop with a working microphone and webcam.

We use a cloud-based virtual training platform, so there’s no software to download beforehand. Your team logs in 10 minutes early to check their setup. Then off we go.

How do you charge for your training?

For our training courses, we charge a fixed fee per group, not per head. That’s why we encourage you to fill every spot for maximum value. Our workshops are tailored to your needs at no added cost.

Do course participants receive a credential?

Yes, every course participant receives a Credly digital badge after completing the course. We send it via email. They can then display it on LinkedIn or anywhere else they choose.
